Who is Allah?

You’ve known the name since before you can remember. You say it when something beautiful catches you off guard, or when the car stops a second too late. It was probably the first word recited into your ear when you were born, and if Allah is kind to you it’ll be the last word on your tongue when you leave. You’ve heard His name your whole life. How well do you know the One it belongs to?

Allah is the One who made you, keeps you alive while you’re reading this, knows what you hide, hears what you can’t put into words, and will bring you back after death. He owns everything without needing any of it. Every act of worship belongs to Him because every good thing you have began with Him.

The Prophet, blessing and peace be upon him, told us that whoever learns and lives by ninety-nine of Allah’s names will enter Paradise. Allah is al-Rahman, the Most Merciful, al-Hakim, the Perfectly Wise, al-Ghafur, the One who constantly forgives, and al-Samiʿ, the One who hears everything. Each name teaches you something true about the same Lord.

The name Allah itself carries more than the English word God does. God can be made plural, assigned a gender or used for whatever people decide to worship. Allah has no plural and can’t be shared out. It’s the name He chose for Himself, pointing to the Creator alone, the One your heart was made to love, fear, trust and call upon.

The only One who truly knows Allah is Allah, so let Him introduce Himself. When people asked for a description, the answer came in a surah short enough that most of us memorised it as children: “Say, He is Allah, One. Allah, the Sustainer needed by all. He has never had offspring, nor was He born. And there is none comparable to Him.” Yet, the way we learn about Him on Earth often sounds very different from this pure truth.

Ask whether that sounds like the Allah you grew up hearing about. A lot of us got the list of halal and haram years before anyone told us He is the Most Merciful or that He loves the people who keep returning. Others grew up with His name around the edges, available when life fell apart, never really met. You can know facts about Allah for years and still feel like a stranger to Him.

Allah is above the seven heavens, above His Throne in a way that fits His majesty, separate from what He made. Nothing contains Him and nothing resembles Him. Yet you’re never outside His knowledge, hearing, sight or care. He sees the room you’re sitting in. He knows why you opened this page. The Lord above all creation is the same Lord you speak to with your forehead on the ground, and no voice is too small for Him to hear.
